MOJ appoints SPM

In March 2010 the Ministry of Justice appointed SPM to undertake preparation of their asset management plan.

The Plan will bring together the studies the Ministry has undertaken in recent years relating to demand and impacts of changes in legislation and court processes; extensive asset data and condition surveys and develop the capital plan utilising the CAM framework.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology

NMIT has licensed SPM Assets as part of its solution to implement an effective Capital Asset Management system.

NMIT confirmed the licence last week and its Facilities staff are now receiving training in the use of SPM Assets and the associated survey application, SPM Mobile. NMIT will use SPM Mobile to carry out property surveys based on the NAMS approach and consistent with the TEC CAM Standard. It will then use the advanced analytical tools available within SPM Assets to provide the information and analysis required for an Asset Management Plan.

NMIT will be the eighth tertiary education institution in Australiasia using SPM Assets and SPM Mobile with several more expected to follow in coming months.

Tertiary Education CAM Standard

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) has released the Capital Asset Management Standard (CAM) and associated toolset for use by the Institute of Technology and Polytechnic (ITP) sector.

SPM developed the Standard in association with TEC and tertiary education institutions in 2010 to reflect the recommended model of best practice asset management within the tertiary education sector. The Standard is available from the TEC website

Whakatane District Council selects SPM and Ignite Building Consultants

Whakatane District Council (WDC) has selected a joint bid between SPM and Ignite Building Consultants (IBC) to undertake condition and performance assessments of its Property, Ports and Parks & Recreation assets.

The project, to be completed throughout February and March, involves the resurvey of all existing assets in WDC’s SPM Assets database. SPM Mobile, a mobile application that runs on iPads and links directly to SPM Assets, will be used to collect and update asset data within WDC’s database in near real time. In addition to updating WDC’s existing asset data, the project will utilise functionality within SPM Mobile and SPM Assets to record the spatial location of buildings and components such as harbour beacons and park benches.

This project represents the beginning of an Alliance between SPM and IBC that utilises SPM’s expert asset management systems, processes and knowledge in combination with IBC’s property surveying expertise and nationwide network of surveyors. IBC will be completing the assessments using the SPM systems and approach to provide WDC the information they need to inform their capital planning process in a cost effective manner.

Enhancements to SPM Assets

Two major enhancements are now available: Work Orders have become smarter and the Projects Form can automatically prioritise projects.

Work Orders - Users can now add a work request at a Property Record level and assign urgency which produces a list of prioritised work orders for review by the Asset Manager. As the work request moves to approved and completed, an email is sent to the originator and the Asset Manager.
The enhancement can be used by your surveyors so that you are immediately notified of any Health & Safety issues. It can also be used as a simple work flow solution to prioritise work requests before they are made into work orders.

The Projects Form can now be used to automatically prioritise projects based on the criticality of assigned components including the importance of the rooms/locations affected. It also provides the option to write further commentaries such as the risk of deferring projects and the breakdown of the project cost. A primary and secondary driver for each project can also be added to allow budgeting and cost allocations.
